I have either worked at a makeup counter or for a cosmetics brand for much of the last 15 years of my life; however, for the majority of that time, I NEVER thought that red lipstick was flattering on me. Maybe it was the flash-backs of my own Mother’s 80s makeup with the bold red lips and dark and boldly drawn “lip” liner that was a deterrent (Sorry, Mom! IJS). Or it was the brain-washed idea that black girls can’t wear certain colors but I was never a fan when I tried to pull off a red lip color on my Tawny brown skin.
Earlier this year, around the beginning of Spring, I think, I began to notice all of these images in various ad campaigns and post after post on Instagram of black girls rockin’ bold red lippies and I thought “Imma have to try again!” Now, I have NEVER in my life been afraid of a little paint, check my Instagram and you’ll see that my makeup personality is far from “no makeup, makeup” and rests comfortably in the “Drag” range but red lips were still something that I had yet to get comfortable with.
So finally, this summer, I started to play around with the idea more and more. I started to go for the red lipsticks in my makeup kit and I realized that the aversion was primarily in my head! Of course, the undertone of any makeup item can play a role with how the color will read on the skin; whether or not the red shade I choose has a yellow/ orange-ish undertone or a blue/ reddish undertone can determine how well it blends with my very golden toned skin. But all in all, I found that I had several red colors already that I could definitely work with.
Above you will see several colors that I am truly fond of. In truth, my favorite is definitely the matte shades but that is no surprise since I am currently loving just about any shade of matte lipstick and I find that the wear of mattes is so much more superior to satin, creams, sheens, and glosses. Right now, I am in love with Motives Maven Mattes and the 2 pictured above are most def my favs!
